A Lokhandwala? Mastermind of AbbasTown carnage killed after arrest

Aslam_1206_LNaimat Khan

KARACHI: The alleged mastermind of AbbasTown bombings, Aslam Mehsud, who was in the police custody, got killed during an encounter with militants in the Surjani town area of the city.

The police during investigation from the accused got information that a big terror plan was finalised and the militants were going to attack on a hospital in the heart of the city. On this, the police prepared a team and conducted a raid at the spot which was mentioned by the under-custody militant, Aslam Mehsud.

Talking to The Frontier Post, the police officials were unable to give satisfactory answer when asked as why a high profile militant involved in the bombings was taken to the spot without providing him proper security cover.

The SSP Crime Investigation Department (CID) Chaudhry Aslam Khan while talking to this scribe claimed that Mehsud was given the appropriate security of five police mobiles but as they approached towards the explosive-laden vehicle which he had spotted during the investigation, the militants opened fire on the police team in which Aslam Mehsud was killed while two cops were also seriously injured.

“He had told us about the location of car and not that the militants may also be there” the ‘innocent’ SPP told this scribe.

According to the reports, the CID police had conducted an operation in the Surjani town area late in Saturday night and claimed to have foiled a major bid of terror in the city. According to police, Taliban commander had told that the car stationed in Surjani was ready to target the AbbasiShaheedHospital to play havoc in the centre of the city.

He said other targets were MQM’s headquarters, Nine Zero and American consulate on MT Khan Road in the south of the coastal city.

A sub-inspector of police, Khalid Saeed, a head constable, Punnu Khan and the militant in custody came in the line of fire.

It may be mentioned that after arresting him along three of his accomplices a day before, the SSP CID had claimed the militant was not only the mastermind of the AbbasTown mayhem but also the commander of Taliban’s militant wing in Karachi.

It also pertinent to note that the Supreme Court had taken notice of the AbbasTown carnage but the killing of its mastermind due to police’s negligence may cease the further developments of the case.

Indonesia detains 80 Rohingya Muslims

Indonesia detains 80 Rohingya MuslimsIndonesian police on Sunday detained 80 Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar on a remote island off Sumatra after they had got lost attempting to reach Malaysia, an official said.

It was the latest boatload of Rohingya to arrive on the shores of Indonesia, as thousands flee Myanmar after tensions between Muslims and Buddhists exploded in their home state of Rakhine last year.

The migrants, including five women and six children, arrived late morning on the island in Pulo Aceh, a cluster of tiny islands off the northwestern coast of Sumatra, local police official September Sembiring told AFP.

“Their boat is still in good condition and they have enough food and fuel. They said they wanted to go to Malaysia but lost their way,” he said.

“They are all well. Two had stomach problems but nothing major.”

They were being held in a large hall at the local police station and were likely to be sent to the mainland where their cases would be assessed by immigration officials, he added.

On Friday police in Surabaya city, East Java province, detained 35 Rohingya hiding out in a flat who had been planning to make the treacherous sea crossing to Australia, according to police.

Many Rohingya arriving in Indonesia face long stints in detention centres awaiting UN assessment for refugee status.

Communal tensions in Myanmar spilled over to Indonesia last week, when a group of Rohingya beat eight Buddhists to death at a detention centre in Belawan, Sumatra, after becoming enraged at news of violence in their homeland.

UN’s Ban urges N Korea to refrain from ‘further provocation’

UN's Ban urges N Korea to refrain from 'further provocation' UN chief Ban Ki-moon made an urgent appeal to North Korea on Monday to refrain from “any further provocation”, following reports that the increasingly isolated state is preparing another nuclear test.

“The Democratic People’s Republic of North Korea cannot go on like this, confronting and challenging the authority of the (UN) Security Council and the international community,” Ban said in The Hague.

“I am urging them to refrain from taking any further provocative measures.”

“This is an urgent and honest appeal from the international community including myself,” Ban told a press conference alongside Netherlands Foreign Minister Frans Timmermans in The Hague, where the UN chief is to attend the third review of the Chemical Weapons Convention.

South Korea said earlier Monday that North Korea appeared to be preparing a fourth nuclear test as well as a provocative missile launch, despite an unusually blunt call from China for restraint.

It was the North’s third nuclear test in February and subsequent UN sanctions that kickstarted a cycle of escalating military tensions on the Korean peninsula.

While North Korea has made no secret of the fact that it intends to carry out further nuclear tests, most analysts believe a detonation in the current climate would be a provocative step too far, even for Pyongyang.

Intelligence reports suggest Pyongyang has readied two mid-range missiles on mobile launchers on its east coast, and is aiming at a test-firing before the April 15 birthday of late founding leader Kim Il-Sung.

Japan has ordered its armed forces to shoot down any North Korean missile headed towards its territory, a defence ministry spokesman in Tokyo said Monday.

A missile launch would still be highly provocative, especially given a strong rebuke the North’s sole ally China handed it at the weekend and a US concession to delay its own planned missile test.

Israel closes Gaza border crossing after rocket fire: army

Israel closes Gaza border crossing after rocket fire Israel’s army closed a goods crossing into the Gaza Strip on Monday a day after a rocket was fired from the besieged enclave, a spokeswoman said.

The rocket crashed into southern Israel on Sunday, as US Secretary of State John Kerry arrived for talks with Israeli and Palestinian leaders.

“The Kerem Shalom crossing is closed until further notice, except for humanitarian purposes, after the firing of the rocket,” the army spokeswoman told.

Sunday’s rocket landed in an uninhabited sector of the Negev desert.

Early Monday there had been no claims for the attack.

Hardline Salafist fighters in Gaza claimed similar rocket attacks last week, which were met with Israeli air strikes that caused no damage or casualties.

Rockets were fired at Israel during a visit to the region by US President Barack Obama in March.

Rape accused Ram Singh had appeared on reality TV show

Rape accused Ram Singh had appeared on reality TV show

: The driver of the bus on which a student was gang-raped and fatally beaten featured three years ago on a television show that was hosted by former top woman police officer Kiran Bedi.

Ram Singh, the main accused in last month’s assault on the woman in New Delhi, had sought help on the show, “Aap Ki Kacheri” or “Your Court”, to get compensation for injuries he sustained in a bus accident, show host Bedi said.

Bedi, India’s most celebrated former woman police officer and now an anti-corruption activist, was host of the Hindi-language programme that helped resolve civil disputes.

In that particular episode, which is available on YouTube, Singh and a bus owner who had refused his demands for compensation stood side by side at podiums as Bedi asked each man to make his case.

“Ram Singh tried to bully his former employer,” Bedi told Reuters, recalling the episode.

A Delhi police officer confirmed that the man in the show was Singh, one of five men charged with the rape and murder of the 23-year-old student whose ordeal triggered nationwide protests.

Singh is expected to plead not guilty when the trial begins. Defence lawyers have said the prosecution’s case is marred by lapses in the investigation.

The rape victim, who had boarded the bus along with a male friend after watching a movie on December 16, died in a Singapore hospital two weeks later.

On the television show, Singh said he was tired of going to a tribunal court to seek compensation for injuries to both his hands.

“I spend a lot of money commuting. I request you to please help,” he told Bedi. But the bus owner said he would pay no compensation and accused Singh of “drunken, negligent and rash driving”.

Singh did not have any criminal record at the time he appeared on the show, the police officer said.

Bedi said the episode involving Singh was one of the few times when the two sides could not reach a settlement.

“Once we saw all the evidence, I realised that Singh was in the wrong,” she said.
